I have a Sony 52XBR3 LCD TV. Any time there is a bright flash or fast motion being imaged, the screen displays smalls squares as if the display can’t handle the sudden, extreme movement of the image. Is there anything that can be done to eliminate this?

What you see are “macroblocks”, an artifact of poor coding/transmission from the source (you cable provider).

LCD Tv’s do not handlefast moving images well. That is why electrical retailers recommend Plasma if you watch sports and movies.
You can get LCD TV’s that are 100hz these handle fast moving images a little better.
You can do nothing to your excisting tv to rectify the problem.
